Seasonal Children’s Play Workers - Summer 2024

Achievement Bute is getting ready for a summer season of children’s holiday activities and events. We are seeking enthusiastic, energetic, creative people to join our team for the 8 week period from 17th of June to 14th August. This will include attending induction training and work-shadowing during the last two weeks in June and then working directly with children during the six week school holidays. The exact hours to be worked each week will vary depending on the needs of the children, but the average hours will be 25 per week. These posts may be particularly suitable for people who are interested in gaining practical experience of working with children and young people.

Rate of Pay:                   £12.00/hr plus holiday pay.      

Hours:                            Average 25 hours per week, to be worked flexibly.

Purpose of post:           To provide direct support to children and young people to enable them to participate in a variety of creative leisure, cultural, sporting and educational activities during the school summer holidays.

Locations:                      Work will take place in a variety of locations on Bute depending on the choice of activities made by the children and their families and may include some work supporting children in their own homes. Some trips to the mainland may also take place.

 This position is regulated work with children under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check.  Where applicable, this post also requires an Overseas Criminal Record Check.  A confirmed offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

Main Tasks:

1.      Assisting children and young people of all abilities and disabilities to play and participate in a range of recreational activities including creative arts and sporting activities, both indoors and outdoors. 

2.      Ensuring the safety of children & young people and a high standard of physical care.

3.      Encouraging children and young people in choice-making and risk-taking whilst ensuring appropriate support.

4.      Building a good relationship with individual children or young people being supported.

5.      Attending staff meetings, supervision and training sessions as required.

 In addition to direct work with individual children and young people, Children’s Support Workers may also be involved in the following:

1.      Assisting in the running of inclusive events.

2.      Assisting in preparation of materials and equipment for events.

3.      Accompanying children and young people on trips in vehicles and/or public transport.

Person Specification:

We are looking for people who are demonstrably:

·        Friendly, open, enthusiastic and welcoming;

·        Creative, resourceful and adaptable;

·        Able to communicate well and build trusting relationships with children and young people of all abilities and their families;

·        Able to demonstrate a good understanding of child development and children’s needs;

·        Able to demonstrate an understanding of and/or willingness to learn about the issues that face people with disabilities;

·        Able to deal with challenging situations when working directly with children;

·        Able to work independently.

Specific qualifications in childcare or a related field are desirable, but are not a requirement. Applicants will be expected to attend paid induction training sessions and work-shadowing.
